'Tags' is a file property (click File Info and then click the option to show all properties). It is the same as 'Keywords' which you can insert into a document via Insert Quick Parts Document Property.

Thank you for getting back to me. It must be smart tags. When I save a file at the bottom right it says 'Tags' So could you please tell me what they do and how they work? Thanks in advance Raymond

The tags in the save dialog are file properties. In theory they allow you to more easily search for the file using these tags.

If you look in windows Explorer, there is an optional column you can display to show these tags. You are supposed to be able to search by them.

I use <WIN><E> to open Explorer.

In the View tab > Current View group you can click on the 'Add columns' drop down. In there you can turn on the 'tags' column.

In the upper right corner of Explorer, there is a 'Search documents' box. You can type file names, or tags or body text.

In theory, you can also search for tags using the Win 10 search function. I have not tested this myself.

Personally, I gave up on the tags feature years ago because I could not get it to work to my satisfaction. Instead, I have been adding 'tags' to my file names. I put a tag a the start of the file name so that the files are grouped together in explorer. I also add the date to the file name so I can see which files are 'most current'. If I want to add more tags, I will often add them to the end of the file name ie

tag1 2016 03 03- filename1.doc

tag1 2016 03 04- filename 2- tag2 tag3.html

tag4 2015 01 01- filename 3.xlsx
