Your UK driving licence is all you currently need in most European countries, but venture further afield and you might have to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP), too. An IDP is basically an official, multi-language translation of your driving licence. International Driving Permits, which are booklets issued by governmental agencies or private organizations designated by a country’s government, are the only official translation of a person’s Driver’s License. I'm highly confident that you'll see no mention of an International Driving Permit, except perhaps for a few extraordinary situations, such as licenses that are not written in the Roman alphabet. Let me add an addendum. One of the writers listed Italy as a country where an International Driving Permit is 'obligatory.' We rented in Italy though. Before you travel the world, pick up your International Driving Permit (IDP), even if you do not plan to drive abroad. An IDP contains your name, photo, and driver information translated in ten different languages, and is recognized in more than 150 countries. The AIT/FIA, through its affiliated clubs, duly authorized by their governments as International Driving Permit issuing entities, is a large and experienced organization in the promotion and distribution of IDPs as part of their commitment to support and defend drivers’ rights and impulse road safety worldwide. Another country cannot issue an IDP to be used in conjunction with a US driver’s license. An IDP accompaning a US driver’s license can only be issued in the USA. See ALREADY OVERSEAS
Many countries require an IDP to drive legally. Fines for driving without an IDP can be quite costly. Check countries requirements before travel.

How to Apply?
AAA is one of only two private entities in the U.S. authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue an IDP.*
You will need to provide:
- Download and fill out an application, and bring it to your nearest AAA branch office**.
- Two original passport pictures (also available at AAA branch offices**).
- A valid U.S. driver's license.
- Pay $20 USD permit fee and you're ready to go!

If you are not able to visit your nearest AAA branch office, your IDP can be obtained through the mail. Simply enclose the following and mail them to the AAA office nearest you (check locally for payment options):

- Two original passport pictures each signed on the back
- $20 USD permit fee
- A photocopy of both sides of your driver's license
