- The problem that I am facing is that when I create the virtual COM port, the port cannot be opened. Within the Card Access software, only COM1 and 2 are options even though all of the ports are listed in the device manager. I’ve read several posts regarding the need to specify named pipes from Hyper-V COM ports.

- Nov 28, 2017 I ran into an issue where I virtualized a Win2K3R2 server onto a Hyper-V on 2K8R2 where I needed to share the COM1 port. Hyper-V does NOT support COM port sharing, unlike Virtual Server or Virtual PC. After much searching on the internet I came across this website that gives a how to on sharing a COM port over TCP/IP, and it works like a charm!
I have a client that just deployed a Server 2008 R2 and enbaled Hyper-V on it. They have an old workstation running Windows XP SP3 which runs a special software program that must use Com1 to communicate with a monitoring device.
I am using Hyper-V Manager on my Windows 8.1 device to host a virtual machine. As it turns out, there is no way to enable your COM ports through the user interface, instead you must use Windows PowerShell (as described here and shown below).
I have followed the directions provided in the link above, and I can see the VM COM ports (1 & 2) listed in the device manager of the VM. I can point at the VM COM ports with the kernel debugger in WinDbg (running on the VM). Finally, I am trying to kernel debug a peripheral device physically plugged into the USB port of the HOST machine (COM4).

You need to access the VM via the 'Remote Desktop Connection' application.
- There is a 'Show Options' button in the lower-left corner.
- There will be a tab labelled 'Local Resources'
- There is a box titled 'Local devices and resources'
- Click the 'More..' button.
- Check the 'Ports' check-box.
- Finally, sign in to your VM under the 'General' tab.
Now you can access the resources of your local machine in your VM.
